As we approach December, it's hard to believe that we've had our bearded dragon, Spike, for twelve years. Our journey with Spike began in an unexpected yet magical way—at a preschool birthday party.
The Party That Started It All
Preschool birthday parties are often filled with laughter, cupcakes, and happy kids running around, and this one was no different. But what made this party truly unforgettable was its Animal World theme. The party featured turtles, snakes, bugs, and BEARDED DRAGONS! My son Jeremiah, with wide eyes and a beaming face, was in pure heaven. He followed all the instructions carefully, making sure he got the chance to touch the snake and even hold the bearded dragon. That was the moment Jeremiah fell in love—with a dragon.
A Christmas to Remember
Soon after the party, How to Train Your Dragon hit theaters, and we were right there in the front row. Jeremiah's newfound fascination with dragons only deepened, and with Christmas fast approaching, I started researching bearded dragons as potential pets. As a mom who loves giving the perfect gift, I wanted to make sure this dragon dream came true.
My research eventually led me to Jeremy, the owner of Pets to Go in Elk Grove, CA. He was incredibly kind and patient, answering all my questions and teaching me everything I needed to know about bearded dragons. On December 12, 2012, I brought Spike home—the best Christmas gift ever.
The Adventures of Spike and Jeremiah
From that day forward, Spike became a beloved member of our family. Watching Jeremiah and Spike grow together has been an adventure of its own. Every year, as Jeremiah grew, so did Spike, with each milestone in my son’s life mirrored by our scaly friend. Jeremiah is now 17, and as we approach Spike's 12th birthday in December, it's hard not to think about all they’ve experienced together.
This blog post is an update and a reminder of how important it is to properly care for your bearded dragon. Reaching the milestone of 12 years old is no small feat for a bearded dragon, and it’s a testament to the love and attention Jeremiah and our family have given him. A bearded dragon like Spike is something special, and with the right care, they can live long, healthy lives and bring immense joy to their families.
Whether he's basking in the warmth of his enclosure or simply hanging out with Jeremiah, Spike is more than just a pet—he’s family. The bond between Spike and Jeremiah is truly special, and we couldn’t imagine our lives without him.
